Comprehensive Nonprofit Board Development & Training Program
Strengthen your nonprofit board through confidential assessment, customized training, and hands-on support designed around your board’s strengths, priorities, and goals.
A one-time board training or retreat can be exactly right when you already know what your board needs. But uneven engagement, role confusion, recruitment challenges, fundraising reluctance, and strain during growth or transition often overlap. When they do, focusing on one topic may leave the bigger picture untouched.
My Comprehensive Board Development Program is a customized nonprofit board consulting engagement that starts by listening to the people closest to the work. Through confidential assessment, leadership conversations, and review of key documents, I get to know how your board works — what’s already strong, where people may be experiencing things differently, and what could use more attention.
From there, we decide where to focus and build the program around what will be most useful to your board.
Good Governance Doesn't Happen by Accident
Every nonprofit board wants to serve its mission well, but even highly committed boards can struggle with questions like:
Where does governance end and management begin?
Are board members clear about their responsibilities and authority?
Why does engagement vary so much across members?
Are meetings producing meaningful discussion and decisions?
Are we recruiting and preparing the right people for where our organization is headed?
What role should board members play in fundraising and community relationships?
How do we prepare for organizational growth or leadership transition without losing momentum?
Committed boards ask these questions all the time. As your organization grows and changes, the board’s roles, expectations, and governance practices don’t always evolve at the same pace.
Looking at your board as a whole helps us see which concerns are connected, build on what’s already working, and focus the program where it can be most useful.
Who This Program Is Designed For
The Comprehensive Board Development Program is a strong fit for nonprofits that already have a governing board and are ready to take an honest look at how it’s working, build on its strengths, and make meaningful improvements together. Organizations often reach out when they are:
Preparing for Growth or Transition
Your organization is growing, navigating a leadership transition, strengthening its funding position, or preparing to take on new responsibilities.
Seeking Greater Board–Executive Alignment
You want clearer expectations, healthier boundaries, and stronger collaboration between board members and executive leadership.
Building or Formalizing Governance
Your board is new or still developing its foundation, and you want to establish healthy roles, expectations, policies, and onboarding practices from the start.
Strengthening an Existing Board
Your board is active and committed, and you want more consistent participation, clearer accountability, and stronger governance practices.
Facing Several Connected Board Challenges
Your board is dealing with low engagement, role confusion, or several concerns at once. You want to identify priorities and create a path forward.
What Makes This Program Different
Board training can be a great way to build shared knowledge. This program begins by understanding what your board needs, then pairs learning with the conversations, tools, and support that help people put it into practice. Three ideas guide the work:
See the Whole Picture and Build on What’s Working
Your board already brings valuable experience, relationships, knowledge, and practices to the organization. Confidential input from board members and leadership helps me understand those strengths alongside the areas where greater clarity or support could help.
Bringing multiple perspectives together often reveals connections that no one person can see on their own. That gives us a stronger starting point and helps us focus the program on what will be most useful to your board.
Put Learning to Work
Board members have space to talk through real situations, ask candid questions, and consider how new ideas apply to their own roles and responsibilities.
Depending on your priorities, I may also help you create or update practical resources related to board expectations, recruitment, onboarding, meetings, committees, or continued development. Your board leaves with clearer next steps and tools or practices it can continue using after the program ends.
Strengthen the Organization Behind the Mission
Your board’s work shapes fundraising and fundability, financial oversight, risk, leadership continuity, organizational readiness, and your nonprofit’s ability to carry out its mission.
We keep those real-world stakes in view throughout the program, helping your board focus its time and energy where stronger governance can best support your organization now and as it grows.
How the Program Works
Every board brings a different mix of strengths, personalities, questions, and growing pains. The program follows a consistent process, but what we spend our time on (and what the work looks like) is shaped by you and your board.
-
Before I recommend training topics, tools, or next steps, I take time to understand your board.
Board members share their perspectives through a confidential assessment, and I meet individually with your executive director and board chair. I also review the governance documents and other materials most relevant to your current questions. When it would add useful context, I may observe a board or committee meeting.
Then I bring those perspectives together to show you what your board is already doing well, where people may be experiencing its work differently, and which challenges appear to be connected. We’ll talk through what I learn and decide where our time together can make the greatest difference.
-
From there, I build the rest of the program around your board’s priorities.
We might clarify roles and expectations, strengthen the board-executive partnership, rethink recruitment or onboarding, work through fundraising concerns, improve meetings or committees, or prepare for growth or leadership transition. Your board may also need help creating or updating practical tools such as board-member expectations, committee charters, recruitment materials, an onboarding process, or an annual governance calendar.
Our work can include interactive training, facilitated board conversations, hands-on working sessions, customized tools and resources, and/or support for applying what you’re learning to real decisions and documents. I’ll stay in conversation with you throughout the process, answer questions as they arise, and help you think through what makes sense for your board.
Depending on your needs and schedule, we may work through a series of sessions, a concentrated retreat, shorter conversations between meetings, or a combination of approaches.
-
At the end of the program, we return to many of the questions we explored at the beginning. A follow-up assessment helps us see what has become clearer, where the board has made progress, and what still deserves attention.
You’ll receive a written report that brings together the key findings, progress, and recommendations for continued development. We’ll review it together so your executive and board leadership understand what comes next and how to keep the work moving.
You’ll also have a complimentary follow-up conversation approximately 60–90 days later to talk through early progress, questions, or challenges that have emerged.

Why Work With Me
Effective board development calls for governance knowledge, curiosity, patience, strong facilitation, and a practical understanding of what nonprofit leaders are balancing every day.
My background spans nonprofit consulting, facilitation, training, grant strategy, and organizational capacity building. That experience helps me connect what happens in the boardroom to the larger realities affecting your organization—from funding and leadership capacity to risk, growth, and long-term sustainability.
I’m a graduate of Dr. Beverly Browning’s Board Training Certification Course, a Grant Professional Certified (GPC) consultant, and a Grant Professionals Association-Approved Trainer.
When we work together, I’ll respect the knowledge and experience your board already brings, create space for honest questions and different perspectives, and explain complicated topics in plain language. You can also count on me to name concerns candidly, share practical examples, and help your board leave each conversation with a clearer sense of what comes next.

It can include education, role clarity, fiduciary responsibilities, board culture, recruitment and composition, onboarding, succession, accountability, meeting practices, and the board’s partnership with executive leadership.

A standalone board training usually focuses on a specific topic through one workshop or presentation. It can be the right fit when you already know what your board needs to learn.
The Comprehensive Board Development Program is designed for situations where several concerns may be connected—or where you aren’t yet sure which kind of support would be most useful.
The program begins with confidential input from board members and leadership. From there, I shape the training, conversations, resources, and hands-on support around what we learn about your board.
-
This program may be worth considering if:
Board members aren’t clear about their roles or authority.
The line between governance and management has become blurry.
Participation or accountability varies widely among board members.
Recruitment feels difficult or reactive.
Fundraising expectations are unclear or uncomfortable.
Your organization has grown, but the board’s practices haven’t kept pace.
Onboarding, succession, or continued board learning happens inconsistently.
The board and executive director need stronger alignment.
Several concerns seem connected, and you aren’t sure where to begin.
The program is a strong fit when board and executive leadership are willing to participate honestly, hear different perspectives, and follow through on what they learn.
-
Yes. Individual responses come directly to me. I share the patterns, strengths, and concerns that emerge across the board without identifying who said what.
This gives board members and staff room to be candid while helping your leadership understand how the board is functioning as a whole. Standard legal, ethical, and safety-related exceptions apply, and I’ll explain those limits before the assessment begins.
-
Yes. I can work with your board virtually, in person, or through a combination of both.
Your program might include interactive workshops, hands-on working sessions, conversations with board and executive leaders, a concentrated retreat, meeting observation and feedback, or help creating and updating practical resources. We’ll choose the combination that makes the most sense for your board’s needs, schedule, and location.
-
Yes, when those resources support the priorities we’re working on together.
I may help your board create or update items such as board-member expectations, committee charters, recruitment tools, onboarding resources, a governance calendar, meeting templates, or existing governance documents.
Your board will make the final decisions, approve any changes, and carry the work forward. Documents with legal implications should receive appropriate legal review. Extensive document development or ongoing project management would be discussed and scoped separately.
-
The Comprehensive Board Development Program unfolds over time. It begins with assessment, brings together customized learning and hands-on support, and concludes with a follow-up assessment, written report, and recommendations for continued development.
A Board Governance Retreat is a focused working session that gives your board dedicated time to build alignment, explore a defined issue, or make progress on specific priorities together.
A retreat may be part of the Comprehensive Board Development Program when it’s the right format for the work. It can also be booked separately when your board already understands what it needs and wants dedicated time to work through it.
Ready to Strengthen Your Board?
You don’t need to have the problem fully diagnosed or know exactly what kind of support to request. If you’re considering board development, a brief, no-obligation consultation gives us a chance to talk through what you’re noticing, what you hope will change, and whether this program makes sense for your organization.
We’ll discuss what prompted your inquiry, what a stronger board would make possible for your organization, whether your board members are ready to participate, and what timing and format might work best.
If a standalone workshop, Board Governance Retreat, another consulting service, or a referral would serve you better, I’ll tell you that too. Just click the button below to schedule a meeting with me at your convenience.
