Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Partnership

  • A nonprofit consultant provides strategic, capacity-building support to help organizations strengthen their programs, systems, and leadership. This can include services such as strategic planning, grant writing and strategy, board development, and program design.

If you want to win more grants, achieve better outcomes for your clients, work more effectively with your board, or build systems and tools that make your work more sustainable and fulfilling, working with a nonprofit consultant can help you move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

  • I enjoy working with a variety of nonprofits in the human services sector, including direct services providers and community-based support. I am especially passionate about supporting grassroots and community-led organizations, as well as those focused on domestic violence prevention, access to early childhood care and education, and financial stability for women and girls.

Other organizations that might benefit from my support include those focused on housing stability, immigrant services, emergency shelter, LGBTQ+ youth, and workforce readiness.

  • I bring senior-level expertise grounded in both strategy and ethics. I’m one of just 20 professionals in Indiana to hold the Grant Professional Certified (GPC) credential, a nationally recognized mark of excellence and ethical practice in the grants field. I’m also a Grant Professionals Association–Approved Trainer and the author of Prepare for Impact.

As an active member of the Grant Professionals Association, I adhere to its Code of Ethics, which means transparency, no commission-based fundraising, and a long-term focus on your organization’s sustainability. You’ll get more than a grant writer; you’ll get a strategic partner committed to doing this work the right way.

  • I approach my work as a collaborative partnership grounded in grant readiness. Because of my background in grant writing and management, I focus on helping organizations build the infrastructure funders expect, including impactful programs, strong outcomes, effective governance, and sustainable systems.

This approach strengthens your organization as a whole, not just individual grant applications, and supports long-term impact for your clients, staff, and volunteers.

Pricing, Fees, and Ethics

  • My rates are competitive for the most areas of the United States, although the specific amount it costs to work with me depends on a number of factors, including the type and amount of support you need, the infrastructure already in place at your organization, and your budget.

When deciding how much you’d like to spend, it’s helpful to remember that hiring a consultant is typically far less expensive than employing full- or even part-time staff to perform the same functions because you won’t be responsible for things like benefits, payroll taxes, or supervision. My goal is to provide senior-level support that strengthens your organization while remaining transparent and realistic about costs.

If you’d like a clearer sense of current investment ranges and what’s included at different levels of support, you’re welcome to send me a message to request a copy of my Services & Investment Overview, which outlines scope, structure, and typical pricing in more detail.

  • Pricing is based on the scope of work, complexity of your needs, and the level of ongoing support required to be effective. In many cases, I recommend a monthly retainer because it allows for continuity, flexibility, and steady progress over time - especially for grant strategy and writing work that benefits from institutional knowledge and long-term positioning.

That said, some organizations are better served by project-based or time-limited engagements, particularly for readiness-building, strategic planning, or focused deliverables. We’ll discuss options together to determine the structure that best fits your goals and capacity.

For retainer engagements, contracts are designed to be straightforward and flexible. My standard agreement allows for cancellation with 60 days’ notice and no penalty, so you’re not locked into a long-term commitment that no longer serves your organization.

  • No. Accepting commission-, contingent-, or percentage-based compensation is a violation of the Grant Professionals Association’s and the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Codes of Ethics. I am honor-bound to abide by these guidelines and treat the nonprofits I work with fairly, which includes using an ethical fee structure.

Grants are awarded based on a variety of factors, including the community need, the efficacy of the project, and the organization’s capacity to implement, deliver, monitor, and sustain the project - not the technical expertise of the grant writer. Your organization wins grants - not me - which is why I’ll work closely with you to ensure your grant readiness before we start submitting proposals.

Furthermore, compensating grant writers based on a commission or contingency is likely a violation of your eventual grant agreement, since generally accepted accounting principles require your organization to provide compensation for services rendered at the time they are received, and grant funding generally can’t be used to cover expenses incurred prior to the award date.

To protect your organization, I only work with clients on a retainer or per-project basis. I’ll work with you to determine a fair, affordable, and ethical fee structure and will always work my hardest to ensure your proposals are funded - no matter the size of the grant.

  • If the work feels aligned but the listed investment is a stretch, that doesn’t automatically mean the door is closed. In some cases, it may be possible to adjust scope, timing, or sequencing, such as focusing on readiness-building first, phasing work over time, or exploring a different service model that better fits your current capacity.

I can also develop a custom proposal and budget for organizations seeking capacity-building or infrastructure support through grant funding, which can make consulting more accessible while aligning with funder expectations.

If you’re unsure what options might make sense, I encourage you to reach out. A short conversation can help clarify whether there’s a realistic path forward now - or whether it makes more sense to revisit at a later stage.

Working Together & Logistics

  • The right fit depends on your organization’s goals, timing, internal capacity, and where you are in your growth or grant-seeking journey. Some nonprofits benefit most from hands-on, ongoing support, while others are looking for focused guidance, readiness-building, or support around a specific project or decision.

If you’re interested in a particular service, I’m happy to share a more detailed guide that outlines scope, structure, and investment - just send me a message to request one. Many clients also find it helpful to talk through their priorities together before deciding, so you’re always welcome to schedule a discovery call to explore options and determine what level of support will be most useful right now.

  • Lead time varies based on the type of service, current capacity, and time of year. In general, most new projects and retainer engagements begin two to four weeks after our initial conversation.

Some services, such as strategic planning or board development, may require additional lead time for scheduling and preparation, while others may be able to start sooner depending on scope and availability. We’ll always discuss timing early in the process so you have a clear sense of next steps before moving forward.

  • Not necessarily. My work is designed to complement and strengthen internal capacity, not replace it. In some cases, organizations work with me in lieu of hiring additional staff - particularly when they need senior-level grant writing expertise or targeted support - but the goal is always to build systems, clarity, and confidence that support long-term sustainability.

Depending on the engagement, I may work closely with your Executive Director, development staff, or board to strengthen grant strategy, improve workflows, and clarify roles. Over time, this often makes internal development work more effective and easier to manage, whether that means supporting existing staff, preparing for a future hire, or reducing the strain on a small or lean team.

Results & Success

  • Grant funding can’t be guaranteed, and success rates vary widely based on organizational readiness, program alignment, and funder priorities. My work focuses on helping organizations pursue opportunities that are a strong fit and building the infrastructure funders expect, rather than chasing every available grant.

While my overall success rate is above industry averages, results vary significantly from client to client. Factors such as grant readiness, timing, competitiveness of the funding opportunity, and internal capacity all play a role. For that reason, I emphasize long-term positioning, sustainability, and strategic decision-making over short-term metrics alone.

For established organizations, my goal is to shift the focus from 'volume of applications' to 'quality of funder alignment,' which naturally increases the long-term ROI of your grant efforts.

  • Outcomes vary based on your organization’s goals, readiness, timing, and the type of support you engage. That said, clients most often see clearer strategy, stronger systems, and greater confidence in their grant-seeking and decision-making.

Depending on the scope of our work together, outcomes may include:

    • A more focused, realistic grant strategy aligned with your programs and capacity

    • Clearer, more consistent narratives that articulate your mission, impact, and value

    • Stronger internal systems to support grants, planning, governance, or board engagement

    • Better alignment between leadership, staff, and board priorities

    • Increased confidence in deciding which opportunities to pursue - and which to decline

While funding outcomes depend on many external factors, my work is designed to strengthen your organization’s overall positioning so grant efforts are more strategic, sustainable, and effective over time.
