Nonprofit Grant Writing & Strategy Services

Expert Grant Writing Support for Mission-Driven Organizations

Consistent, strategic grant support - without the stress.

Grants are a critical part of a strong, diversified funding strategy, but managing them well requires time, expertise, and consistent attention. Many established nonprofits find themselves stuck in a frustrating middle ground: they have strong programs and a track record of funding, yet limited internal capacity to keep grant work moving forward strategically and sustainably.

Carpenter Nonprofit Consulting provides professional grant writing services for nonprofits through a partnership model designed to meet the realities of how organizations actually operate. Whether you are maintaining an active grant portfolio or looking to expand your funding opportunities, my work is designed to bring clarity, momentum, and long-term positioning to your grant efforts.

Grant Writing Services on Retainer

A grant partner you can rely on.

For nonprofits with established programs and active funding goals, a grant writing retainer offers a structured, sustainable way to pursue grants consistently - without adding staff or increasing administrative burden.

Through this partnership, I integrate into your organization’s existing systems and workflows and take the lead on grant strategy, writing, coordination, and follow-through. The result is steady momentum, stronger alignment with funder priorities, and significantly less stress for your leadership and development staff.

  • Grant strategy and targeted prospect research

  • Letters of inquiry and full proposal development

  • Funder-aligned narrative development grounded in your programs and outcomes

  • Grant calendar and deadline management

What This Service Includes:

  • Coordination of attachments, budgets, and internal inputs

  • Online submission support

  • Narrative reporting and renewal support, as needed

Deliverables vary based on grant complexity, readiness, and deadlines, but most clients experience consistent progress across their grant pipeline rather than reactive, last-minute submissions.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Most organizations I work with maintain an active, prioritized pipeline that includes renewals alongside new opportunities. In a typical month, this includes a combination of proposal development, submissions, and prospecting work - paced to align with your team’s capacity and the competitiveness of each opportunity.

Most clients submit between 2–3 proposals per month, depending on complexity and timing. This may include a mix of letters of inquiry, foundation proposals, and larger applications.

The goal is not maximum volume. We prioritize the right opportunities at the right time, so grant work moves forward consistently while strengthening your positioning and long-term funding sustainability.

Why Nonprofits Choose a Retainer

A retainer-based partnership provides many of the benefits of an in-house grant professional - continuity, accountability, and strategic oversight - without the cost, supervision demands, or turnover risk of adding staff. This model is especially effective for nonprofits that want:

  • Predictable, year-round grant capacity

  • Senior-level expertise without increasing headcount

  • Clear visibility into what’s being pursued, submitted, and reported

  • A trusted partner who can lead the process independently

This retainer is designed to reduce the need for dedicated internal grant capacity. Your team remains involved where needed, providing program insight, reviewing drafts, and supporting relationships, but the day-to-day responsibility for managing and moving the grant pipeline no longer sits on your staff.

All grant writing services are grounded in professional best practices and ethical standards. I do not work on commission or contingency, and I do not guarantee funding outcomes. My focus is on strong alignment, realistic strategy, and building grant systems that support long-term sustainability.

This is not high-volume, transactional grant writing.

It’s an ongoing partnership where your grant work is actively managed, prioritized, and moved forward in a way your organization can sustain.

Who This Service Is a Strong Fit For

Grant writing retainers are best suited for:

  • Established or growth-stage nonprofits with active programs

  • Organizations with prior grant funding experience

  • Executive Directors and development leaders managing multiple priorities

  • Human services and community-based organizations seeking aligned, sustainable funding

Additional Grant Support Services

While monthly grant writing retainers are my core offering, I also provide a small number of targeted grant-related services for organizations with specific needs or internal grant capacity

  • Strategic prospect research helps nonprofits focus on funders that genuinely align with their mission, programs, and values.

This service is a good fit if you:

    • Have internal capacity to write grants

    • Want to be more selective and strategic

    • Need clarity about where to invest your grant-seeking time

Prospect research can be a standalone engagement or a first step toward a longer-term grant partnership.

  • Boilerplate grant narrative development provides a reusable, funder-ready narrative foundation you can adapt across multiple grant applications.

This service is designed for organizations that plan to manage their own grant writing but want:

    • Clear, consistent language describing mission, programs, and impact

    • A reliable starting point that reduces rewriting

    • Stronger alignment across applications

  • Per-project grant writing may be available on a limited, case-by-case basis for organizations with a clearly defined funding opportunity and scope.

This option works best when ongoing grant services are not the right fit and availability is assessed carefully to ensure quality and alignment.

Experienced, credentialed grant support you can trust.

My work is grounded in nearly a decade of nonprofit grant experience and nationally recognized professional standards. I bring both strategic judgment and practical execution, with an approach rooted in ethics, fit, and long-term sustainability.
